19th century
Description

Large Antique Pair Of Bronze Marley Horses After Guillaume Coustou Signed.

Beautiful and unusually large pair of bronze Marley horses. Both pieces are cast in wonderful detail with a lovely rich patinated finish. They show off a wonderful detail and even the bases have flowers and a naturalistic effect. They are also signed “Coustou” and a cast after A French, bronze equine statue in the manner of Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746), with these examples dating to around 1880.

Considered a masterpiece of French sculpture, the large marble originals skilfully represented here in quality, heavy bronze. With the originals displayed in the Musee de Louvre, this is an opportunity to grace your home or institution with fine antique bronze examples.

They each measure approximately:

- 15.5” / 39.5cm Tall.

- 12.5” / 32cm Wide.

- 5.5” / 14cm Deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Marly Horses are scaled reproductions based on the marble statues sculpted by Guillaume Coustou between 1743 and 1745 for the Chateau de Marly. Reductions cast in bronze became widespread across Europe throughout the nineteenth century as classic decorative accents.

These figures are produced using copper-tin alloy metal through sand casting or lost-wax techniques. The surface is chemically treated with oxides and heat to create a dark brown or green patinated finish.

Authentic period castings display defined hand-chased surface details in the mane, muscles, and reins, alongside the cast signature Coustou near the base. They also exhibit expected weight density and subtle oxidation wear consistent with age.

Position the pair symmetrically at opposite ends of a dining room sideboard, mantelpiece, or executive desk. The dark metal finish complements light stonework, dark timber paneling, and neutral backdrops.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush. Apply a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax periodically to shield the metal from humidity and finger oils.
