Andirons, also known as chenets, originated in medieval times to elevate logs off the hearth floor to improve airflow for fires. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in France, they evolved into highly ornamental decorative bronze works displayed in formal drawing rooms.

Traditional andirons are typically cast in iron, bronze, or brass using the lost-wax casting method, then finished with mercury gilding or ormolu techniques to create contrasting metallic tones.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-chased surface details, patination consistent with age, heavy cast construction with hand-cut fasteners, and tool marks indicative of historical manufacturing techniques rather than modern molds.

These pieces can be placed within an open hearth as functional elements or positioned inside an unused fireplace opening as a focal sculptural art installation to add historical character to a modern room.

Care involves gentle dusting with a soft dry brush to remove particulate matter. Chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, and water should be avoided to prevent stripping the historic gilding or creating undesirable patination changes.
