Description

An exceptional Caucasian runner, hand woven in the Talish region of Azerbaijan circa 1900 with a geometrical design on an indigo field and ivory border. A highly collectible rug with fabulous wool quality and stunning secondary colours.

Size: 2.97m x 1.22m (9ft 9in x 4ft)

This runner is in very good condition with light, age related wear. The fringes are original and selvedges are secure. Slight corrosion to brown wool in the detail, giving the design a raised appearance.

Talish rugs originate from the Talysh region in the South Caucasus. They are hand-knotted textiles recognisable by their long, narrow proportions, deep indigo fields, and geometric medallion or star motifs within structured borders.

These rugs are woven using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. The yarn is coloured using natural vegetable and mineral dyes, producing deep blues, reds, ivories, and greens.

Authentic pieces feature hand-knotted wool construction, symmetrical Ghiordes knots, minor colour variations known as abrash, and specific geometric motifs such as latch-hook stars and octagons along an elongated central field.
