Description

This beautiful early suzani is in the nim-suzani format which I have rarely seen in Tashkent pieces. Dating to the second quarter of the 19th century, it is embroidered finely in silk on a cotton background. Although the main colour is the ubiquitous fuchsia often seen in Tashkent examples, there are lots other delightful colours seen in the details, a clear indication of an early date. The field is decorated with a row of blossoms, but is centred by a circular motif which is often associated with the moon (Oy-Palak) in Tashkent suzanis. The chain of similar ornaments in the border. These ornaments have been stylised and have lost their original meaning, but clearly have a mystical origin. In good original condition, the lining has been repaired in one or two places, but the embroidery is in very good condition.
