Antique Swedish Empire Giltwood Settee

19th century
Description

An incredibly beautiful antique Swedish Empire giltwood settee. This was recently imported from Sweden, we would date it to around the 1880-1900 period.

The quality is outstanding, the gilt wood frame has an absolutely stunning design and a beautiful patina. There is profuse, crisp carving throughout, this is so beautiful it looks as if it came out of a palace.

The condition is excellent for its age, we have had it re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. There is just some minor surface wear here and there.

This is part of a suite that we have, including a matching pair of side chairs and marble top table, all seen listed under our other items for sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the early 19th century under Karl XIV Johan, Swedish Empire furniture adapts French Neoclassical and Empire forms with distinct Nordic proportions, featuring ornate giltwood detailing, architectural crests, and classical palmette motifs.

These pieces typically feature carved hardwood frames coated in gesso before water-gilding or oil-gilding with gold leaf, combined with hand-tied webbed seats and traditional upholstery techniques.

Authentic examples display hand-carved classical details such as leaf crests, pinecone finials, and fluted legs, accompanied by natural wear or oxidisation on the gilding where underlying gesso or bole clay shows through.

Position the piece as a focal statement in an entryway, formal drawing room, or beneath architectural wall panelling, pairing it with neutral textiles and minimalist contemporary elements to balance its ornate metallic frame.

Dust gently using a soft camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which dissolve gesso layers, and maintain stable relative humidity to prevent wood movement and gilding flaking.
