Antique Uzbek Suzani in Prayer Format, Silk on a Yellow Cotton Ground, Circa 1920.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 3in x 3ft 3in (130 x 100cm).

Antique Uzbek suzani of prayer format on a yellow cotton ground.

Circa 1920.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are often embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is of prayer format known as 'jo-i-namoz' with six solar discs and floral sprays on a yellow cotton ground, possibly from Sharisabzh in southern Uzbekistan.

The condition is good with only very slight wear and no repairs, the yellow cotton ground is slightly faded.

The suzani is ready for display.

Ref: T-0353.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a decorative embroidered textile originating from Central Asia, traditionally crafted in Uzbekistan as part of a brides dowry.

Suzanis are typically crafted using silk thread embroidery on narrow strips of hand-woven cotton or linen ground, using techniques such as tambour stitch, chain stitch, and couching.

Authentic pieces feature ground fabric made from narrow cotton strips sewn together, hand-spun cotton backing, natural vegetable-dyed silk threads, and subtle stitching variations throughout.

These embroidered textiles are commonly mounted as framed wall art, hung flat as decorative tapestries, or positioned over furniture to add colour and historical texture to a room.

Due to delicate silk stitching and natural dyes, suzanis should be kept away from direct sunlight, stored in acid-free tissue, and cleaned exclusively by specialist textile conservators.
