Antique Uzbek Suzani, Silk Embroidery on a Red Adras Silk / Cotton Ground, Circa 1900/20.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 8ft 6in x 6ft 7in (260 x 200cm).

Antique Uzbek suzani, silk embroidery on a red cotton ground.

Circa 1900/20.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example has fine silk 'basma' stich embroidery in floral designs, on a red adras silk / cotton field. It was probably woven in South Eastern Uzbekistan, near the Tajik boarder, probably Tajik work. The suzani would have been used as a bed cover or wall hanging.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, the backing is cotton with a floral design. There are a few slight small old water marks to the red ground.

The suzani is ready for display.

Ref: T-0321.

This antique Uzbek suzani from the period 1910 is a rectangular textile piece designed in a Central Asian style. It is made from a red adras silk and cotton ground with yellow and white silk thread embroidery, complemented by a patterned border and slight wear. The piece measures 260 cm high, 200 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. It features a central solar medallion surrounded by botanical sprays and floral motifs. In a contemporary home, this textile works well placed above the bed as a decorative wall hanging or bed cover. The maximalist wonderland design vibe adds vibrant colour and cultural heritage to interior spaces, bringing traditional craftsmanship into modern living areas.

A suzani is a hand-embroidered textile traditionally created in Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan, as part of a brides wedding dowry. The term derives from the Persian word for needle, referencing the fine chain stitch or tambour work used to craft intricate decorative patterns.

Uzbek suzanis are typically constructed with a base fabric of cotton, silk, or a hybrid adras woven ground. The decorative embroidery is executed using natural vegetable-dyed silk threads, sewn in continuous chain stitch or couching stitch variations.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries exhibit slight variations in dye shades, known as abrash, due to small-batch vegetable dyeing process. They are constructed in multiple narrow hand-woven cloth strips stitched together before embroidery, with drawn guidelines occasionally visible underneath threadwork.

A suzani can be mounted as a focal wall hanging above a headboard or sideboard, bringing rich colour and pattern to modern schemes. Alternatively, it can be draped over upholstered furniture, folded at the foot of a bed, or framed as large-scale textile art.

Antique textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading and fibre degradation. Cleaning must be left to specialist textile conservators; water washing or standard dry cleaning should be strictly avoided.
