Antique Uzbek Suzani, Silk on a Black Cotton Ground, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 8ft 9in x 5ft 10in (266 x 177cm).

Antique Uzbek Samarkand region suzani, silk on a black cotton ground.

Circa 1900.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are often embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is probably from Urgut, near Samarkand and it features large multi coloured solar discs entwined in a green leafy vine. The suzani has been embroidered in silk couching stitch on a black cotton ground. A wonderful example with stunning colour.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear, the suzani is not backed.

The suzani is ready for display or it could be used as a bed cover.

Ref: T-0236.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a hand-embroidered decorative textile originated by tribal groups in Uzbekistan and Central Asia, traditionally created as part of a brides dowry to symbolise luck and fertility.

Traditional suzanis are crafted using silk thread embroideryoften utilizing tambour or chain stitchesexecuted onto narrow strips of cotton or linen ground fabric that are stitched together.

Authentic antique suzanis display natural dye variations, hand-spun fabrics, hand-drawn design grid lines underneath the embroidery, and slight irregularities in stitch tension or panel alignment.

Suzanis can be displayed as large decorative wall tapestries, draped across the foot of a bed, framed as textile art, or used as statement throws over sofas in bohemian and eclectic interiors.

Suzanis should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent silk fading and kept dry; professional conservation cleaning or gentle vacuuming through a mesh screen is recommended over washing.
