Andirons, historically referred to as firedogs, were created to elevate firewood off the hearth floor. This design allowed air to circulate underneath the logs for better combustion while keeping burning fuel contained within the fireplace.

Traditional firedogs were primarily hand-forged from wrought iron using a blacksmith hearth, anvil, and hammer. Many examples feature brass or bronze decorative finials attached to the top of the upright irons.

Authentic hand-forged pieces display slight asymmetries, visible hammer marks, and joined elements created through hot riveting or collar joins rather than modern uniform welds. Natural surface oxidisation and surface patination also indicate age.

Antique andirons can be placed inside functional open fireplaces or decorative non-working hearth alcoves. They add visual weight, texture, and architectural structure to a living room or dining room hearth setting.

Wrought iron should be cleaned using a dry stiff-bristled brush to remove soot and loose rust debris. To protect against further corrosion without damaging the natural patina, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax or beeswax paste.
