Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chenets, also called fire dogs or andirons, are decorative metal supports positioned at the front of a hearth. In the French Rococo style, they feature asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaf foliage, and rocaille motifs inspired by eighteenth-century designs.

High-grade French chenets from this period were typically cast in bronze and finished with mercury gilding, a process known as ormolu. Later nineteenth-century examples were also produced in cast brass or gilded bronze with chased surface details.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature heavy cast construction, hand-chased surface details, and casting marks or foundry stamps on the reverse. The gilding displays natural wear along edges and high points consistent with age and heat exposure.

Architects and designers place gilt metal chenets inside non-working fireplace openings or on hearth stones to create a focal point. Their sculptural forms contrast effectively against dark painted surrounds, stone mantels, or minimalist contemporary fireplaces.

Ormolu surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid using abrasive polishes, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents, as these can strip or damage the original gilded layer.
