Antique Ersari Turkmen Main Carpet, Good Early Example With Wear, Circa 1850-70.

Size: 8ft 11in x 8ft 1in (272 x 246cm).
 
Antique Ersari Turkmen main carpet from Southern Turkmenistan or Northern Afghanistan.
 
Circa 1850 - 1870.
 
The carpet has 3 rows of 7 large goli guls with interesting linked star minor guls and other filler elements in the field. The main guls are of a superb large size and octagonal in shape. The random filler elements in the field point to true tribal origin. The boxed design used in the border is associated with earlier Ersari carpets. The carpet has a warm soft terracotta red field colour with the guls drawn in blues and blue-green.
 
The carpet is in fair condition with heavy wear in places and low pile.
 
The carpet is suitable for light domestic use.
