Antique Uzbek Shahrisabz Region Suzani, Silk on Cotton, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 8ft 4in x 5ft 7in (254 x 170cm).

Antique Uzbek Shahrisabz suzani, silk on brown cotton ground.

Circa 1900.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is of a good size with silk 'basma' couching stitch embroidery on a cotton field in shades of brown. It was probably woven in Southern Uzbekistan, Shahrisabz region, which is about 80km south of Samarkand. The suzani would have been used as a cover or wall hanging, they were also used on special occasions to cover the ground for the serving of food, like a table cloth.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, there are a few very small old slight stains. The suzani was re-backed in 2006 in Mazar-i-Sharif.

The suzani is ready for display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Suzani is a hand-embroidered textile traditionally crafted in Uzbekistan and wider Central Asia as part of a brides dowry. Derived from the Persian word for needle, these panels feature botanical, astral, and symbolic motifs worked in silk thread across woven ground fabrics.

Traditional Suzanis are embroidered using fine silk threads on narrow strips of hand-loomed cotton or linen fabric that are stitched together. Artisans employ techniques such as chain stitch (ilmok) or couching stitch (basma) to build dense geometric and floral patterns.

Authentic antique pieces feature narrow fabric strips hand-sewn together, subtle variations in thread shade from natural plant dyes, and slight pattern alignments across panels. The presence of hand-stitched needlework rather than uniform machine embroidery also confirms age and origin.

An antique Suzani can be mounted as a focal wall hanging behind a sofa or bed to add visual texture and rich colour. Alternatively, it can be draped over upholstered seating, used as a throw, or framed as large-scale textile art in modern and eclectic interiors.

To preserve silk embroidery, keep the textile away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent dye fading and fibre degradation. Cleaning should be done by professional conservators, or lightly vacuumed through a protective mesh screen, and stored rolled around acid-free tubes.
