Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Naive School refers to works created by self-taught or itinerant artists who worked outside formal art academies. These paintings are characterised by a simplified visual perspective, linear focus, reduced anatomical symmetry, and direct emphasis on decorative detail and personal subject matter.

Mid-19th-century portraits were typically executed in oil paint applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, panel boards, or millboards. Frames were frequently constructed from native hardwoods or softwoods finished with birds-eye maple veneer, walnut, or water-gilded gesso mouldings.

Authentic period works display natural signs of age, including uniform craquelure across the paint layer, darkening or oxidisation of original varnish, stretcher impression lines along the margins, and original hand-forged or early industrial tacks securing the canvas to wooden stretchers.

A naive portrait can serve as a focal point when hung above a console table, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall. Combining historic portraits with modern lighting or contemporary furniture creates an engaging visual contrast in both traditional and minimalist schemes.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, dampness, and fluctuating heat sources such as radiators. Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, and avoid applying water, household cleaning solutions, or polish to the painted surface.
