Rare Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Dish. Signed Kinkozan. Circa 1890.

Finely decorated cloisonne enamel with elaborate detail to front and back of dish. Beautifully rendered with central peony and visiting bird, amidst further foliage and flowers, surrounded by similarly finely decorated medallions of plants and flowers. Rim and base silverised, with further flowers and geometric patterns to the back. Strong vivid colours in red, pale green, blues, pink and blacks. The rear with signatures of the Kinkozan factory forming part of the overall artistic presentation. Superb and extremely rare (heavy for size).

Sold with old original sales label from Mariko-Tada Antique Store, Seattle - Made for private collector Kitamura in Kyoto.

Condition: Excellent condition but with some cloisonne firing losses and small localised imperfection (shown in the photographs). Brass, enamel and silver in excellent condition. No dents and correct circular form and beautiful shimmering effect under natural light.

During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese artisans refined the art of cloisonne, transforming it into a major export industry. Technical advancements led to finer wirework, a broader palette of enamels, and polished mirror-like surfaces.

Cloisonne items are typically constructed on a copper or bronze base. Fine strips of copper, silver, or gold wire are affixed to the surface to create cells, which are then filled with coloured vitreous glass paste before firing.
