Stunning Large Japanese Cloisonne Enamel ''Dragon'' Charger. Circa 1890.

Superbly rendered with fierce dragon spouting fire and protecting the pearl-of-life. Three toed dragon superbly rendered and of the highest artisan skills and quality. Very finely applied against a light grey en-plein enamel backround, surrounded by a gold-stone border with mosaic cloisonne decoration. Magnificent detail to the dragon's head, eyes, horns, scales, and battling between spouting flames, with the dragon fiercely protecting his pearl*.

Condition: Excellent condition and circular shape with no dents, creases or losses. Original untouched superb condition and polished to perfection. [Stand not included].

A Meiji period cloisonne charger is a decorative enamel plate produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912. During this era, Japanese craftsmen perfected enamelling techniques, creating intricate, detailed artworks on copper or bronze bases featuring mythical beasts, florals, and complex geometric patterns.

The process involved soldering fine copper or brass ribbons (cloisons) onto a shaped metal vessel to outline the design. Vitreous enamel pastes were then applied inside these compartments, fired in a kiln multiple times to fill down shrinkage, and finally ground smooth and polished.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century display extremely fine wirework, minimal pinholes or pitting in the enamel glaze, and complex colour palettes often incorporating dark grounds or sparkly aventurine enamel. The underside typically shows exposed counter-enamelling or patinated copper bases.
