First Period Worcester Porcelain James Giles Hope Edwardes Pattern Dessert Plate C.1770

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Fancy Fox

A stunning small Worcester porcelain scalloped dessert plate painted in the Hope Edwardes pattern with a glorious cornucopia shaped claret ground overlaid with fine ciselé raised gilding. The central reserve has a large main arrangement of peach, grapes, red berries and morning glory flowers and scattered around are floral and berry sprigs and a small radish. Decorated in the atelier of James Giles, c.1770.

This stunning pattern came into being following the commission of a dessert service by Sir Thomas Edwardes, whose descendant family later took the name Hope Edwardes.

Reference: ''In Search Of James Giles'' by Gerald Coke, page 96 and plate 52c. Described as the ''Hope Edwards'' (sic) pattern, No. 2 version. There are some examples that are just floral but still decorated by Giles (No. 1 version according to Coke), and some other variations coming slightly later into the mid-1770''s, not decorated by Giles, but probably by the factory itself and also include tea wares.
