The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Davenport is a compact compact writing desk featuring a sloping lid with a leather or faux-leather writing surface, traditionally fitted with side drawers. Originating in the late 18th century, they became exceptionally popular throughout the Victorian era as space-saving writing cabinets.

Victorian Davenports were typically constructed from a secondary timber like pine or mahogany, which was then veneered with high-quality woods such as walnut, burl walnut, or ebonised to simulate exotic hardwoods. Construction often featured dovetailed drawers, hand-turned wooden knobs, brass galleries, and inset leather writing panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers consistent with the era, hand-applied French polish finishes, and authentic hardware such as brass locks and ceramic or wooden castors. Examining the underside and drawer interiors will reveal tool marks and patination indicative of age.

A Davenport desk serves as an exceptional focal point in a home study, living room, or bedroom due to its compact footprint. Pairing it with a sleek, contemporary chair creates a striking juxtaposition between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

To preserve the finish, keep the desk out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent the wood from drying and warping. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the timber and leather with appropriate conservation-grade wax or leather cream.
