Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian oak desk stands as a substantial pedestal writing table, styled for a traditional gentleman's library or study. The solid timber displays a warm golden brown colour and rich patina, complemented by an inset green leather writing surface on the top. Nine graduated drawers flank the kneehole opening, fitted with round turned wooden knob handles and keyholes. A decorative carved arch spans the kneehole apron beneath the central frieze drawer, and the entire structure rests upon sturdy plinth bases. Measuring 122 cm wide, 82 cm deep and 74 cm high, the desk provides ample workspace and storage. It fits naturally into a home office, a study or a traditional period interior, serving as a functional centrepiece for daily writing or administrative tasks.

FAQs

A Victorian pedestal desk typically features two vertical columns of drawers supporting a flat writing surface, configured around a central kneehole space. Popular during the nineteenth century, these pieces provided substantial drawer storage alongside a leather inset workspace.

Victorian desks were constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, frequently combined with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and turned wooden or brass handles. The writing surfaces were routinely lined with gilt-tooled leather inserts.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period locks, turned drawer knobs, and natural wear along the plinth base. The timber exhibits distinctive grain figure, such as quarter-sawn oak medullary rays, combined with natural patination.

A Victorian oak desk introduces texture and history when positioned against contemporary neutral backdrops in a study or home office. Pairing the desk with modern task lamps or architectural chairs creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax along the grain once or twice annually. Keep the leather insert clean using a damp cloth and protect the wood from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying.
