A stunning antique burr walnut chest on chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is superb, this is a great size and offers lots of storage space. It has a bow shaped front, with a pull out sliding shelf in the middle. There is a lovely moulded cornice, the drawers have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints, and this sits on bracket feet. The drawer fronts are cross banded, this has high quality brass handles.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is excellent for its age. The burr walnut grain patterns and colours are gorgeous throughout.

The top lifts right off the base and this comes in two halves for ease of transport.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

A tallboy, or chest on chest, emerged in the late 17th century and became immensely popular during the Georgian period. It was designed to maximise vertical storage space in bedrooms while offering a sophisticated architectural presence.

Traditional tallboys are constructed using a softwood carcass, such as pine or oak, which is then veneered with highly figured decorative woods like burr walnut or mahogany. Dovetail joints on the drawer construction and solid brass hardware are standard indicators of period craftsmanship.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers consistent with the era, hand-bevelled mirrors where applicable, and natural ageing like shrinkage cracks and oxidisation on the hardware. Examination of the drawer linings and backboards helps verify age.

An antique tallboy works well as a statement piece in a contemporary bedroom or hallway, contrasting clean modern lines with rich texture and grain. Keeping the surrounding decor neutral allows the natural figure of the wood to stand out.

Preserve walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and cracking. Apply microcrystalline wax periodically to clean and protect the timber, avoiding silicone-based polishes.
