The George III style, spanning roughly from 1760 to 1820, is characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and the prominent use of high-quality imported timbers such as mahogany, often incorporating neoclassical influences.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, solid timber drawer linings, and traditional brass hardware such as swan-neck handles and escutcheons.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the secondary timbers used inside the piece, the presence of hand-cut dovetails, irregular tool marks indicating hand-planing, and natural age-related patination and oxidisation on the wood surfaces.

An antique bureau works well as a grounding focal point in a modern space by pairing its rich wooden tones with neutral walls, minimalist seating, and contemporary lighting to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber without building up heavy chemical residues.
