Sold by Elmgarden
Description

An Early Large Pewter Meat Platter by Shaw and Stewart

The platter stand on simple strong feet, it has robust solid cast handles, and on the top is the access to the reservoir for hot water to keep the meat warm. The whole must have been incredibly heavy when full of hot water and with a roast turkey on top! The edge has a simple moulding and the interior has deep channelling to collect the meat juices. The platter is well used but just the largest and most impressive piece, it is almost 4” high, 25” long and 18” wide

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tree and well meat platter is a heavy serving dish featuring recessed branch-like grooves that channel juices into a deeper reservoir, designed to collect pan juices during carving.

Antique platters were primarily cast from pewter, an alloy consisting predominantly of tin mixed with copper, lead, or antimony to provide structural integrity and weight.

Authentic Georgian pewter platters feature maker touchmarks stamped on the base or rim, hand-finished cast construction, a soft grey patina, and subtle surface wear consistent with historical use.

An antique pewter platter can be displayed upright on a kitchen dresser, arranged flat on a dining sideboard as a rustic centrepiece, or mounted on a wall within a collection of antique metalwork.

Clean pewter using warm soapy water and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or dishwashers, and apply a neutral microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the surface oxidisation.
