Antique Oil Painting The Skating Minister In The Style Of Henry Raeburn

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Lee Sherman Antiques

Antique Oil Painting The Skating Minister in the style of Henry Raeburn. —minister of Canongate Kirk and member of the Edinburgh Skating Society—gracefully gliding across a frozen loch. The skating club in Britain frequently skated on Duddingston or Lochend lochs, just outside Edinburgh.

The original, long attributed to Sir Henry Raeburn, questions have since arisen over the painting’s authorship. X-ray analysis revealed the absence of lead-white paint under the face—a hallmark of Raeburn’s technique—suggesting the work may instead be by Henri-Pierre Danloux, a French artist active in Edinburgh in the late 18th century.

This later interpretation beautifully captures the quiet elegance and poise of the reverend set against a stark, wintry landscape. Whether inspired by Raeburn or Danloux, the painting evokes the cultural and historical charm of the original, while offering its own timeless appeal.
