An Ersari chuval is a large, finely knotted bag face produced by the nomadic Ersari tribe of Turkmenistan, traditionally used within a yurt for storing household goods and bedding.

These pieces are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile and foundation, coloured using rich natural dyes such as madder root for deep reds and indigo for dark blues.

Authenticity is determined by examining the handle of the wool, the structural characteristics of the weave, the use of natural colour variations known as abrash, and the presence of traditional gul motifs unique to the tribe.

Such pieces can be displayed as striking wall hangings to protect the textile or used as small accent floor coverings in low-traffic areas to add historical texture and warmth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with suction only through a mesh screen, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoiding chemical cleaners.
