Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This large Victorian dinanderie brass jardinière serves as a log or peat bin, originating from Belgium around 1900 and measuring 40.5 cm high by 37 cm wide by 37 cm deep. The piece is formed from brass with a polished finish and a rich golden-bronze colour, featuring stamped quality marks for Ville De Dinant. The body displays hand-hammered repoussé floral motifs of flowers and leaves across the centre, bordered by riveted studded bands around the upper rim and circular base. The lower section incorporates a gadrooned base design, and each side holds a heavy lion head handle fitted with a drop ring. The surface shows a lacquered finish requiring no polishing, with an original and unrestored structure. In a contemporary home, this container suits placement beside a fireplace hearth for logs or peat, or functions as an impressive indoor planter.

FAQs

Dinanderie refers to decorative metalwork, particularly hammered brass or copper, originating from the Dinant region of Belgium during the Middle Ages and later adopted across Western Europe.

Traditional pieces were crafted from sheet brass, featuring hand-hammered repousse or chased decoration, riveted borders, and cast metal handles attached to the body.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-chased relief work, riveted seam joins, irregularities from manual shaping, and natural patination or oxidisation on internal surfaces.

These vessels can be positioned on a hearth to contain firewood, utilised as decorative planters for indoor foliage, or placed in an entryway for umbrella storage.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth, clean occasionally with mild soapy water, and apply metal polish sparingly to retain shine without stripping depth from the embossed details.
