Afshar Tribal RugAntique Wool SofrehNomadic Weaving Ask the dealer for something similar
Description

Woven by Afshar nomads circa 1900-1920, this might be described as 'modern art' today and if it were a painting by Mondrian, Klee or Rothko, then it would demand a high price as you might imagine! But, because it was woven art, made by a wandering nomad at the beginning of the 20th century, it would be over-looked! No signature to give it so-called status! Just a magnificent use of spontaneous weaving to create this stunning flatweave which would have been used for simply kneading dough to make the flat-bread (lavash).

The zig-zag movement, I believe, symbolises flowing water, one of the most important things to have in nomadic life along with bread and salt. Flatweaves like this look amazing on the wall. I love it!

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A sofreh is a flatwoven textile traditionally used by nomadic and village communities in Persia for the preparation and consumption of meals, particularly for rolling and resting dough.

Authentic pieces are typically handwoven from hand-spun sheeps wool, often featuring natural plant and insect-derived dyes such as madder and indigo.

Identification involves examining the weave structure, asymmetrical knotting or slit-tapestry flatweave techniques, wool quality, and characteristic geometric motifs unique to specific tribal groups.

Such pieces can be displayed as wall hangings to protect them from floor traffic, used as distinctive table runners, or placed over neutral furniture to add texture and historical depth.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, regular gentle vacuuming with a mesh screen, and avoiding excessive moisture.
