Antique Uzbek Samarkand 'Bolim Posh' Suzani, Superb Colour and Condition, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 9ft 11in x 8ft 11in (303 x 272cm).

Antique Uzbek Samarkand 'bolim posh' suzani, superb colour and condition.

Circa 1890.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This is an excellent sample of an old Samarkand suzani known as 'bolim posh'. These were used as a canopy over the bride and groom during their wedding ceremony. The large sun disc motifs are said to be rooted in ancient beliefs. Note the use of glowing cochineal dye in the large discs. The silk colours really stand out against the yellow / gold cotton ground.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs.

The suzani is ready for display.

Ref: T-0023.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a hand-embroidered textile panel originating from Central Asia, traditionally created as part of a brides dowry. The term bolim posh refers to a specific design composition featuring circular medallions arranged in a structured grid or lattice pattern.

Traditional suzanis were constructed on narrow strips of handwoven cotton or silk foundation cloth that were embroidered using silk threads before being stitched together. Common embroidery techniques include chain stitch (ilmok) and couching stitch (basma).

Authentic 19th-century suzanis feature hand-spun cotton bases, natural plant-based dyes, and slight misalignments where the individually embroidered panels are joined. The presence of soft colour variations (abrash) and traditional motifs like solar discs or rosettes also indicates period authenticity.

An antique suzani can be mounted on a fabric-lined stretcher and hung as focal artwork above a bed or sideboard. It can also be draped over upholstery or used as a decorative bed cover to introduce texture and historic pattern to a room.

Keep antique silk embroideries away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fibre degradation and colour fading. Cleaning should be done by professional textile conservators, and if hung, the weight must be evenly distributed using velcro backing strips.
