Antique Afghan Firozkohi Embroidered Kilim or Cover, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 8ft 2in x 4ft 4in (250 x 133cm).

Antique Afghan Firozkohi embroidered kilim or cover.

Circa 1900.

The Firozkohi are a semi nomadic tribe found in North West of Afghanistan. This kilim is a good example of a style which is unique to the Firozkohi, it is soft undyed brown wool, flat woven and then embroidered in bright colours usually in a concentric diamond pattern. This example could be a floor kilim or equally a cover / blanket or even a family eating cloth. This is quite a scarce weaving.

The kilim is in good condition with slight even wear, note the original long tassels at both ends. The shape is slightly irregular due to the nomadic origin of the kilim.

Ref: D-5043.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from Central Asian tribal communities, Firozkohi kilims are flatweave textiles traditionally created by semi-nomadic weavers using hand-spun wool and intricate embroidery techniques to form geometric motifs.

These textiles are hand-woven using flatweave slit-weave or embroidery techniques on hand-spun wool warps and wefts, often finished with hand-braided wool tassels and dyed using natural plant or mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces display subtle irregularities in weave tension and dye saturation, known as abrash, alongside hand-twisted fringe details, natural wool texture, and flat embroidered geometric patterns rather than pile knots.

Flatweave textiles can be draped across modern upholstery, mounted as wall art in living spaces, or layered over neutral sisal rugs to add textural warmth, visual geometry, and historic character to contemporary schemes.

Clean gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush, immediate spot-cleaning with cold water and mild detergent, and periodic professional dry cleaning by textile specialists help preserve delicate natural fibres and vegetable dyes.
