Description

Very rare Turkoman from the Arabachi tribe. Not famous for being beautiful weavings, these are none the less very collectable and this example has some redeeming features, long lustrous pile, a pleasing foxy brown field colour and is clearly early in date.

A torba is a small, rectangular, bag-face woven by nomadic tribes in Central Asia, traditionally used as a storage sack inside a yurt or tent for bedding, clothing, or household goods.

These pieces are typically hand-knotted or pile-woven using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile and foundation, often dyed with natural madder root and other plant or insect-based dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregularities in weave and design, natural abrash colour variations in the wool, traditional tribal gull motifs, and wool or goat hair selvages indicative of nomadic production.

They are frequently mounted as textile art on walls, framed, or used as small accent floor pieces in studies, hallways, and living rooms to add texture and historical depth.
