Technical Description

Two magnificent Art Nouveau copper reliefs by the Austrian sculptor Karl Sterrer dating to c1890. The pencil inscriptions on the back name then as Aphrodite and Prometheus but is more likely to be Aurora the goddess of dawn, and Luna, the goddess in heaven and of the full moon. Signatures on the lower right and they have their original frames and card backs.

Amazing wall art for any house style.

Karl Sterrer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Alios Delug and won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1908 and the Reichel Prize, in 1919. He was the son of a sculpture and was one of the first Austrian artists to be intrigued by the beginnings of German Expressionism.

Today, examples of Sterrer's original prints and paintings are housed in the collections of the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, the Dresden Gallery and the Austrian Academy in Vienna
