FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact form of writing desk featuring a sloping top and pedestal drawers, originating in the late 18th century and gaining popularity during the Regency and Victorian periods.

These pieces are traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany or rosewood, often featuring hand-dovetailed drawers, leather-lined writing surfaces, and intricate carved supports or brass galleries.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine timber shrinkage, traditional secondary woods, and patination consistent with age and hand-polishing.

It functions effectively as a compact workstation in a home study or living room, pairing well with contemporary minimalist seating to create a striking historical contrast.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep out of direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally feed the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
