This antique Kurdish Kelleh long rug originates from the first quarter of the twentieth century in the Persian tribal style. Produced from an all-woollen construction, the textile displays a navy blue central field populated with a repeating geometric lattice pattern of boteh motifs. The composition incorporates a natural abrash colour variation alongside multi-coloured yellow and red borders containing geometric floral patterns. Professional reweaves, rear hessian patches, and secure ends and sides mark the condition of the piece, which has undergone a hand wash and de-dusting process. Measuring 311 cm high by 166 cm wide with a 1 cm depth, the large carpet functions as a floor covering suitable for an English Country House interior. The heavy rectangular format suits placement in generous living spaces, hallways, or reception rooms to provide warmth and texture underfoot. The traditional motifs and deep tones integrate smoothly with classic and eclectic furnishing schemes while offering a substantial decorative presence in domestic settings.

A Kelleh rug refers to a specific traditional Persian size format, typically long and wide, historically intended to sit at the head of a rooms central seating layout. Kurdish examples are hand-knotted by weavers in Kurdistan, featuring distinctive tribal motifs, saturated natural dyes, and durable wool construction.

Traditional Kurdish rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, often bound onto a wool or cotton foundation. The yarns are dyed using natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied knot irregularities, flexible foundations, and natural dye variations known as abrash throughout the pile. The reverse side displays clear, visible knot structure without rubber backing or synthetic web layers.

Due to its elongated proportions, a Kelleh rug works effectively in wide entrance halls, corridors, or placed centrally underneath long dining tables and large living room seating arrangements to anchor the space.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibers. Use a quality underlay pad to prevent slipping and friction wear, and turn the rug annually to balance sun exposure and foot traffic.
