Cloisonne is a metalworking technique where enamel paste is placed within compartments defined by fine metal wires soldered to a vessel body. During the Meiji period, Japanese metalworkers perfected these techniques, producing vessels characterised by clear details, vibrant enamels, and nature-inspired motifs.

These vases are formed on a metal base, commonly copper or brass, onto which delicate wire strips are applied to outline the pattern. Ground glass enamel paste mixed with mineral pigments is placed into each partitioned section, fired in a kiln multiple times, and ground down to a smooth finish.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit precise wirework, minimal pitting in the enamel, and fine surface polishing. Rims and bases often display exposed dark brass or copper trim, and the designs frequently depict floral themes, insects, or birds executed with detailed shading.
