Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province, named after the port of Imari from which they were shipped. Developed in the seventeenth century, the style became prominent globally during the Edo and Meiji periods for its vivid palette and intricate hand-painted motifs.

Imari porcelain was crafted using high-fired white kaolin clay. The decoration features a distinct multi-stage firing process, combining underglaze cobalt blue paint with overglaze enamels, primarily iron-red, finished with delicate gilded detailing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit underglaze cobalt blue concentric rings on the reverse, spur marks from kiln supports, and freehand brushwork with slight human variations. Late nineteenth-century Meiji examples frequently display dense composition, combining figurative reserves with traditional floral brocade patterns.

A large Imari charger can be displayed on a dark wood sideboard using a plate stand or wall-mounted above key furniture pieces to create a focal point. Its strong blue and orange tones contrast effectively against modern neutral backdrops or rich, jewel-toned walls.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild washing-up liquid with a soft microfibre cloth, taking care around surface enamel and gilt gilding. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or dishwashers, and ensure wall mounts use padded arms to prevent surface scratching.
