This Victorian triple companion fire tool set comprises a poker, a pair of tongs, and a shovel, designed for traditional hearth use. The collection is constructed from warm polished brass with an iron poker tip, presenting a bright golden metallic appearance against the hearth. Each tool features a turned brass handle with a decorative urn finial at the top. The shovel includes a pierced patterned blade with cut-out details, while the tongs are hinged with a circular ring mechanism and the poker terminates in a pointed iron end for tending logs. Measuring 71 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, these implements are suitable for placement beside an active fireplace or an interior decorative hearth within an English Country House setting.

FAQs

A companion set comprises hand tools, typically including a shovel, poker, and tongs, designed to manage open coal or log fires. Originating in earlier centuries, these sets evolved from purely functional iron implements into decorative brass hearth accessories during the Georgian and Victorian eras.

Fireside tools were predominantly cast or forged from brass, iron, and steel. High-wear components, such as the tips of pokers, frequently incorporated iron for heat resistance, while decorative handles, shafts, and shovel blades were crafted in cast or turned brass.

Authentic antique pieces display cast seam lines, hand-turned finials, and unrefined threaded joins or hand-riveted construction rather than modern machine welds. They typically exhibit age-appropriate patina, light surface pitting, and subtle asymmetric wear near the functional ends.

Positioning antique brass tools beside a contemporary wood burner or tiled fireplace insert adds textural contrast and warmth to modern living spaces. The metallic tone complements minimalist neutral hearths as well as classic brick or stone surrounds.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent soot buildup. To retain historical patina, avoid aggressive chemical cleaners and polish lightly with a specialised brass cream only when necessary, ensuring iron tips remain dry to prevent oxidisation.
