FAQs

Japanese cloisonne, known as shippo-yaki, reached its technical and artistic zenith during the Meiji period (1868-1912), characterised by intricate wirework and enamel on metal bases.

These pieces are constructed using a brass or copper base, upon which thin metal ribbons (cloisons) are soldered to form compartments. These cells are then filled with coloured glass enamel paste and fired multiple times before being polished.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century typically feature fine, meticulously applied brass or silver-plated copper wirework, subtle tonal gradations in the enamel, and occasional maker marks or workshop signatures on the base or rim mounts.

An antique cloisonne vase works exceptionally well as a focal point on a mantlepiece, bookshelf, or side table, contrasting clean modern lines with rich historical texture and vibrant colour.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive substances, and keep the piece out of direct sunlight to protect the enamel.
