Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Signed and dated lower right Rowland H. Hill 1910: fixes the date.
Gentle, even toning across the paper: natural oxidisation over more than a century.
Steam-powered crane alongside a masted ship: industrial harbour scene of that era.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian maritime watercolour painting by Rowland Henry Hill, titled "The Dock Yard", dates to 1910 and depicts tall ships, masts and rigging, a dockyard crane, and a misty harbour rendered in muted grey and blue tones. The composition includes a moored sailing vessel, a smaller steam tug alongside the quay, and industrial machinery under an atmospheric sky, all signed in the lower right corner and preserved within a gilt frame. The painted paper medium displays fine brushwork capturing the damp atmosphere and water reflections. The piece measures 54 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. It works well displayed in a gentleman's library or positioned directly above a sideboard in a traditional living space or dining room.

FAQs

Edwardian maritime watercolours created between 1901 and 1914 typically feature industrial harbours, coastal shipping, and working vessels. Artists of this era focused on atmospheric effects, subtle tonal variations, and documenting the transition from sail to steam power.

Artists utilised water-soluble pigments suspended in gum arabic, applied directly to heavy cotton rag paper. Techniques involved layered washes, wet-on-wet brushwork, and occasionally gouache highlights to capture atmospheric light and mist.

Authentic period watercolours often feature pencil artist signatures, dates, or gallery labels on the reverse. Natural paper age-toning, foxing, and the characteristic matte texture of historical pigments also help distinguish original works from modern reproductions.

Atmospheric marine paintings integrate well into contemporary spaces when paired with dark wood furniture, brass accents, or neutral wall colours. Hanging the painting above a sideboard or console table creates a focal point without overwhelming the surrounding room design.

Watercolours must be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of sensitive pigments. Frame the artwork using UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials to protect the paper from moisture and environmental deterioration.
