John Bedloe Goddard was a well-respected British artist known for his detailed and evocative landscapes, often capturing the natural beauty of rural England. Although he may not be widely recognized in the broader history of 19th-century British art, Goddard’s work reflects a deep connection to the natural environment and a meticulous approach to capturing its essence.

John Bedloe Goddard was born at Tyneham House, Bridge Street, Christchurch, Hampshire on 13th November 1838. He was the eldest son of John Bryer Goddard, a surgeon, and his wife Eliza Bedloe.

His work reflects a deep connection to the natural environment and a meticulous approach to capturing its essence. He specialised in watercolours and in his most prolific period, in the late 1880s, he travelled around the south of England capturing the landscape and seascapes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape watercolours typically depict scenic topography, British rural views, and coastline details with delicate brushwork, reflecting a growing appreciation for nature and outdoor sketching during the 19th century.

Artists used water-based pigments painted directly onto heavy rag paper, which were subsequently mounted behind glass within gilded wooden frames to shield the delicate paper from environmental damage.

Authentic pieces feature hand-applied pigments on paper, artist signatures or dates, age-appropriate foxing or yellowing, and period-correct mounting techniques rather than modern mechanical print dots.

Display framed landscape artwork as a singular focal point above a sideboard or mantlepiece, or integrate it into a gallery wall to create a balance between traditional subjects and modern decor.

Watercolours must be placed away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and fluctuating temperatures, ideally preserved behind UV-filtering glass with acid-free backing materials to prevent discolouration.
