This nineteenth-century Indo-Persian pestle and mortar is made of heavy cast brass with a bright brass-gold colour. The mortar features a flared rim, a moulded foot, and intricate engraved scrollwork depicting stylised flowers and leaves around the body. The matching pestle has a turned shaft with rounded ends and prominent decorative rings. The fabric underneath shows a pale cream damask pattern with woven floral and scroll motifs. Measuring 14 cm high by 13 cm wide by 13 cm deep, this traditional culinary implement is designed for preparing herbs and spices. Today, this item serves well as a decorative accessory in a gentleman's library or displayed prominently on a kitchen island. The surfaces show minor signs of handling and age-related wear, with a very clean overall condition and well-preserved surface details. The heavy metal construction produces a clear ring when struck, highlighting its solid craftsmanship. Practical yet ornamental, it brings classic Indo-Persian style into contemporary interiors as a functional display piece or a historical tabletop accent.

Historically utilised in apothecaries, kitchens, and laboratories, a brass pestle and mortar served to grind herbs, spices, and medicinal compounds into fine powders.

Traditional pieces are cast from solid brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, often finished with turned lines, hand-engraved motifs, or chased decoration.

Authentic items generally exhibit seam lines from historical casting methods, evidence of manual turning on a lathe, surface wear inside the bowl, and naturally occurring surface oxidisation.

These objects function well as decorative accents displayed on kitchen dresser shelves, open pantry racking, or styled atop a sideboard alongside botanical items.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and clean gently using warm water with mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that might strip historic patina or damage delicate engraving.
