This nineteenth-century cheese making pot, functioning as a log bin or garden planter, stems from the Victorian period around 1850. The round vessel comprises patinated copper with a verdigris interior, showing a distinct weathered brownish-copper finish. Construction details include a rolled rim, riveted metal banding, and sturdy wrought iron side handles extending outwards on opposite sides. The antique piece measures 38 cm in height, 94 cm in width, and 61 cm in depth, providing ample internal capacity for holding firewood logs or acting as an outdoor planter. Placed in a home today, this rustic farmhouse accessory sits comfortably beside a living room fireplace hearth or functions as a striking decorative container in a garden or patio setting.

During the 19th century, large copper vessels were manufactured primarily for utilitarian domestic tasks such as laundry, brewing, and food preparation, as well as hearthside log storage.

These items were crafted from heavy-gauge sheet copper, often featuring hand-riveted seams, rolled rims, and forged wrought-iron handles for structural integrity.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-hammered dovetail joints, hand-formed rivets, variable thickness in the metal, and genuine oxidisation or verdigris rather than artificially applied patinas.

Positioned beside a wood-burning stove or fireplace, a copper bin offers textural contrast, or it can be repurposed as an indoor plant container or umbrella stand.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that strip away the original aged patina and verdigris finish.
