This Victorian pedestal desk dates from around 1870 and serves as a substantial workspace for a study or library. It is constructed from mahogany with flame mahogany veneer panels on the cabinet doors and features a rectangular top inset with a dark green leather writing surface. The configuration includes a central frieze drawer flanked by two pedestal units, each fitted with small drawers above cupboards, all decorated with small turned wooden knobs. Plinth bases support the structure at the floor, and the design incorporates moulded edges around the top and drawer fronts. Measuring 78 cm high, 133 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, this double-sided piece provides access to working drawers and cupboards on one side and matching faux elements on the other. The timber displays a rich warm brown tone with distinct flame figuring across the vertical panels, complemented by the newly fitted green tooled leather insert on the writing top. In a modern home, this piece functions as a central executive desk positioned in the middle of a room or study.

A Victorian kneehole desk is characterised by a central open recess designed for legroom, flanked by twin pedestals containing drawers or cupboards, often topped with a leather writing surface.

These desks were commonly crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, frequently featuring decorative flame mahogany veneers, hand-tooled leather tops, and cast brass or turned wooden hardware.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass lever locks, natural ageing to the timber underside, and genuine wear patterns along the plinth base and handles.

Combine the dark wood with crisp neutral walls, a contemporary task lamp, and modern artwork to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Maintain the woodwork using high-grade beeswax applied along the grain, and clean the leather writing top with a soft, slightly damp cloth followed by a specialised leather conditioner.
