Antique Sultanabad Carpet

19th century
Description

This antique Sultanabad carpet has a wonderful high wool pile all over and is full of delightful natural dyes.  The variety of greens, pinks and purple hues work so well on this steel blue main ground colour - the border colour is a soft brick red tone, which helps ground the carpets palette adding warmth.  A wonderful symmetrical pattern too, woven by skilled weavers over 120 years ago, this decorative carpet is ideal to place in a drawing room, study or snug for example.  Condition is really very good too, a brilliant high soft wool pile all over.  We can even see the original end finishing when it was cut off the loom.

If you would like to reserve this carpet and arrange a viewing, please make contact in your preferred way, we would be happy to help you.

Our home visits are available nationwide, please contact us to make an appointment.  It can also be viewed at our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey by appointment too.

Sultanabad carpets are very important in the history of weaving as Sultanabad was formally known as Arak which was once the capital of Persia in the 1800's.  Famous carpets such as Ziegler were woven in Sultanabad by the company Ziegler & Co which produced open large floral designs for western tastes and thrived in the late 19th century exporting these carpets to the US and Europe.  Sultanabad carpets are know as older better quality Mahal's woven from the mid to late 19th century there pile is much flatter than the younger Mahal carpets and using softer colours rather than the typical reds and blues we associate with most Persian carpets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gentle maintenance requires regular vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. Professional cleaning using specialist low-moisture methods is recommended, alongside placing an underlay beneath the carpet to reduce friction.

A patterned Persian rug serves as an anchor in a living room or dining space, balancing modern minimalist furniture with architectural interest or complementing traditional timber furniture and muted wall shades.

Authentic pieces feature a flexible and supple handle, subtle natural colour variations known as abrash, and distinct hand-knotted knots visible on the reverse side rather than uniform machine stitching.

Traditional Persian rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool yarns are traditionally coloured using natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects.

Sultanabad carpets originate from the town of Arak, formerly known as Sultanabad, in Iran. Developed during the late nineteenth century primarily for Western export markets, these carpets became famous for their large-scale botanical patterns and softer colour palettes.
