FAQs

A Davenport desk is a small, compact writing desk that originated in the late 18th century, traditionally featuring a sloped writing lid and drawers accessed from the side. It was named after a Captain Davenport who commissioned the first such piece from the workshop of Gillows of Lancaster.

These desks are typically constructed using a solid secondary wood such as mahogany or pine, overlaid with decorative veneers like burr walnut or flame mahogany. Traditional construction involves dovetailed drawer boxes, turned wooden supports, and inset leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional secondary timbers, and genuine hand-applied polishes like French polish. Examining the interior mechanisms, drawer linings, and hardware wear patterns helps confirm authenticity.

An antique Davenport desk functions well as a focal point in a home office or living room, paired with a minimalist chair to balance old and new aesthetics. Keeping the surface styled with simple desk accessories highlights its intricate woodwork without overwhelming the space.

Antique walnut furniture should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood and veneer from drying and cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the finish.
