70 X 66cm Antique Belouch 'Birdbag'

1900 - 1920
Description

A highly collectable item. The Belouch were famed for their use of dark, moody colours and this is a great example of that. They could pick out a few details in natural ivory and against the dark, rich colours these details really jump out, as you can see with the central peacock, around which the others revolve. In great condition and with all natural dyes, this is a great addition to any tribal art collection.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Belouch weavings were traditionally created by nomadic Baluch tribes inhabiting the border regions of eastern Persia and Afghanistan. These utilitarian textiles, including bags, rugs, and salt bags, were hand-knotted or woven for daily use during nomadic migrations.

Belouch textiles are typically constructed using locally sourced sheep wool for both the pile and foundation, often combined with dark goat hair for structural side selvages. Dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, yielding dark blues, deep reds, and rich browns.

Authentic Belouch bird bags feature a characteristic dark colour palette, soft flexible wool, and repeating stylized avian motifs across the central field. Original pieces often retain flatwoven backs or upper loops used for securing cargo during transit.

Small tribal bagfaces are frequently mounted and framed as wall art, draped over accent furniture, or adapted into decorative floor cushions. Their rich tones and geometric patterns provide visual texture in contemporary and minimalist interiors.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading and maintaining low humidity to protect natural wool fibres. Regular light brushing or low-suction vacuuming without a rotating beat-bar helps remove particulate dirt.
