Description

This intriguing rug was woven around 1910 in the Kirman Laver workshops of south-east Persia, considered to be among the very best in Persia up to the mid-20th century. It depicts scenes from the Life of Joseph. The lower scene captures the moment Joseph is removed from the well by his brothers, while the upper scene depicts the brothers selling Joseph to the merchants. It is beautifully drawn with vivid colours. The costumes and facial features are finely rendered. The border is decorated with repeating roundels featuring Joseph, his father Jacob, and Potiphar's wife Zollechah. Joseph is regarded as a symbol of righteousness and self restraint who resisted the advances of Zollechah and the temptations of Egypt. Finely knotted with merino wool, it has survived the generations in excellent condition.
