A stunning George III period mahogany bureau bookcase.
The bookcase cabinet has a dentil cornice over two moulded doors which open to reveal three substantial adjustable shelves. The bookcase sits above two long and four short drawer chest with a fall front top which opens on to the top two short drawers. The chest interior boasts a green and gilt stamped leather writing surface, lockable inlaid central cupboard door which opens to reveal three drawers within, eight pigeon holes, eight drawers with the lower right being a built in inkwell, a sliding well and three secret compartments. The two flanking hidden compartments can only be opened by sliding hidden catches within the pigeon holes to either side.
Working lock and key present for the bookcase cupboard, bureau and internal cupboard. The key for the drawers is absent. Later but historically accurate brasses. Lower door bolt is detached but present. The top bolt remains firmly affixed and functional. There is some sun fading ...to the left side. A single piece of dentil cornice is absent to the left side and there are some small knocks to the right side of the fall front (please see photographs).
A hole has been neatly cut into the back of the bureau to allow leads to be pushed through into the sliding well without being seen. This is an excellent feature should one wish to use the piece as a computer desk, however should this not be required, the extracted piece of wood remains with the piece and can be replaced if desired.
An extremely attractive and functional piece.
