Description

An absolutely stunning antique French inlaid marquetry knee hole desk. This was made in France, it dates from around the 1930’s.

It is a lovely petite size, and is of outstanding quality. There is profuse floral inlaid marquetry of various woods on all sides, including the back and top. There are amazing bronze ormolu mounts, and a beautiful brass rim around the top edge. This has a good amount of storage space and is beautifully finished on the back, so can be used as a free standing item.

This is in very good original condition, we have had it re-polished, there is only some extremely minor wear here and there beneath the polish.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying high-quality beeswax, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture.

Pairing the ornate woodwork with minimalist modern seating and neutral surroundings creates a striking contrast that highlights the craftsmanship of the piece.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut veneers with slight irregularities, aged patination on the timber, and cast bronze or brass mounts secured with hand-cut screws.

Marquetry involves applying finely cut wood veneers, such as walnut, rosewood, and fruitwoods, onto a core structure to create pictorial or geometric patterns.

The Louis XV style is characterised by asymmetrical designs, curved lines, cabriole legs, and elaborate floral marquetry or ormolu mounts.
