Description

Size: 3ft 8in x 2ft 5in (113 x 74cm).

Antique Afghan Baluch prayer rug by the Taimani nomads of central western Afghanistan.

Circa 1900/20.

This is a interesting example of a small Taimani prayer rug, the design of two latch hook medallions on a soft red ground. The border design is most unusual and may point to the rug being from Turkestan.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear, and good pile.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use and would make a superb wall hanging.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Taimani Baluch rugs are woven by nomadic tribes along the western Afghan and eastern Persian border regions. They are distinguished by geometric latch-hook patterns, stepped diamond medallions, and a prayer arch design known as a mihrab, executed in rich saturated dyes.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, typically woven onto a wool or cotton foundation. Natural plant-based and mineral dyes create the characteristic deep reds, terracottas, dark blues, and earthy tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted asymmetrical or symmetrical construction with visible abrash, which refers to slight colour variations in the wool due to batch dyeing. The edges feature woven selvages, and the design relies on geometric, repeating tribal motifs rather than curvilinear patterns.

Small antique prayer rugs are frequently used as entry accent rugs, mounted on walls as decorative textile art, or layered over larger neutral flat-weave carpets in living areas and studies.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar removes surface dirt without damaging the hand-knotted pile. Professional hand-cleaning by a specialist rug restorer is recommended to treat stains and maintain natural dyes.
