Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau metalwork from this period is characterised by sinuous lines, organic forms, and natural motifs such as flowers, foliage, and stylised female figures with flowing hair and elaborate headwear.

Sculptors frequently used spelter, an alloy of zinc, as an affordable alternative to bronze. These pieces were typically patinated to resemble cast bronze and mounted on carved alabaster or marble bases.

Spelter is lighter in weight than bronze, soft enough to show white zinc oxidation where scratched, and is often cast with subtle seam lines. Bronze is denser, harder, and oxidises to a green or dark brown patina rather than showing white underlying metal.

A classic bust works well when paired with contemporary art on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf. Placing the sculpture atop stacked books or alongside architectural objects highlights its historic silhouette against minimalist backgrounds.

Dust the item gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid liquid cleaners, polish, or abrasive chemicals, as these can strip the original patination from the spelter and stain porous alabaster.
