A restful painting of cattle next to a stream at Marshside, Kent by William Sidney Cooper. Several cows are shown watering whilst others graze in the meadow behind. To the far right a farm house and other buildings can also be seen. Marshside is a small hamlet that lies near the Chislet Marshes southeast of Herne Bay in Kent. At the time of this painting, Cooper was living in Herne Bay, around 5 miles away and within easy travelling distance of Marshside. It was a place he returned to on a number of occasions to paint.
 
William Sidney Cooper was born in Canterbury, Kent in 1854 and was the son of John Ramsay Cooper, a dispensary chemist and Mary Barber. He was the great nephew of Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902), the famous landscape painter. His talent for ...
