From the late 19th century this is a wonderful large decorative antique Ushak carpet with amazing burnt orange dyes for the main field, and a soft white large border. The border comprises of floral designs and vines flowing beautifully throughout this large carpet, using gold tones and muted greens. An amazing carpet to decorate with in great condition all over.
Ushak carpets were woven in Western Anatolia which was one of the largest rug production areas since the Ottoman Empire. Their designs tend to be more open than Persian rugs and use soft natural dyes. The faded green border colour works so well with the soft reds and muted golden tones.
Woven with the famous Garrus design, primarily found on antique Bidjar carpets and rugs from Persia. This is known as the split arabesque design from the town of Garrus in Bidjar, one of the most famous and desired patterns. Often seen on fine Tehran carpets as well as used in Anatolia (Turkey) in the late 19th century in Ushak carpet...s such as this one.
A wonderful pile is apparent over most of this 140 year old carpet. In very good original condition, with no losses to the outer design and no large repairs. Some small areas of lower wool pile, but nothing significant, most of the carpet has a high pile throughout.
Please request a home visit to see this beautiful antique Ushak carpet at home, we love to travel all over, having visited clients and interior designers all over the UK for the last 30 years.
